Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) was set up in 1996 as an alliance of companies who believe that litter has a significant adverse affect on our environment and as a consequence, has a direct negative impact on tourism, Foreign Direct Investment and our food industries. Ireland relies hugely in our image as a clean and green island. We are now a high-cost destination for visitors, who deserve first-class standards of cleanliness.
IBAL believes that it is the job of Local Government to solve our litter problem. It is through enforcement of litter laws - not public information campaigns - that we will rid our country of this scourge.
Newport Tidy Towns agrees entirely with IBAL's sentiment and competes strongly each year in its class in the Mayo Anti-litter League, culminating in wins in both 2011 and 2012. A direct consequence of these excellent results is a greater awareness in the town of the negative impact of litter and an overall reduction in littering generally.
